Episode 114 – Rudy Novotny (runDisney Announcer), Part 1

Rudy NovotnyToday we begin a 2-part interview with someone I’ve been wanting to chat with for a long time: runDisney Sports Host Rudy Novotny. Rudy has been a race announcer for a long time, a runner for even longer than that, and he has some great stories, insights, and much more, so I’m pleased to bring him to you.

Announcing the first ever Listeners, Readers, and Friends Cruise hosted by me!

I, through this podcast and through my book Faith and the Magic Kingdom have teamed up with the Skywalking Through Neverland podcast for this epic event!

We’ll be sailing on the Disney Wonder for a 5-night Baja Mexico cruise September 17-22, 2017 and you are invited! We’ll be able to dine together, do a port adventure together in one of the ports, and even do some fun hangouts like a live podcast recording or two, a Faith and the Magic Kingdom chat, and more–all optional, of course! Participate in as many or as few of the group activities as you want to. And the more people we have in our group, the more options we’ll have to do cool things!

Yes, I know September of 2017 sounds like a long time from now, but we need to start planning and preparing now because there’s a lot that goes into this. Also, as the ship fills it will get harder and harder to keep our group together and to get you the best possible price. Besides, you want to have enough time to save for it, right?

More details will come as we have them—including a couple other podcasts we’re working on partnering with and maybe even a special guest or two—but for now, your first step is to get more information from me! Go to storiesofthemagic.com/cruisequote and click on the orange “Get a Quote” button in the upper left to get a free, no obligation quote. You’re not committing to anything, just getting information with that request. In the Comments section mention “Stories of the Magic” so I know you want to be part of our group. Or if you prefer, email me at randyc@cruisingco.com or call me at (714) 697-6755.

We’ve had a good response, but we need more! Yes, September of 2017 sounds like a long time from now, but we need to start planning and preparing now because there’s a lot that goes into this. Also, the ship is filling up, so the longer you wait, the harder it will be for me to keep our group together and to get you the best possible price.

I know a lot of you are thinking, “Well, let me wait until it gets closer and we’ll see if I can do it or not.” If that’s you, I have a suggestion. Any money you put down now is fully refundable until final payment is due, and that’s not until late June of next year. So if you think this is something you even might want to do, contact me for a quote. We’ll select your room category and you can put down your deposit so we can secure your spot, get you the best price and the room you want, and you can be included in the planning and preparation.

Then, when we get close to final payment—or anytime between now and then—if you decide you definitely can’t do it, just let me know and we’ll cancel your reservation. You’ll get your full deposit back and you’re not out anything. On the other hand, if you “wait and see” and then decide next spring you want to go after all the prices will be higher and there may not be any availability at all, and then you’ve missed out. Better to have your spot and cancel if necessary than to wait & see and maybe not get in at all—that’s my suggestion, anyway.

And remember, you can contact me for a quote & more information, and there’s no obligation to that at all!

We hope to see you on the Disney Wonder with us for a truly amazing adventure!

Now, in this episode, Rudy talks about…

  • What’s making him smile today
  • The start of his running journey
  • What his first race was, and whether he was “one and done” with it
  • His first marathon
  • Whether he still runs races or not
  • Some long-run running advice
  • How he got into race announcing
  • How he got hired as a Disney race announcer
  • The first race he announced with his co-announcer Carissa Bealert
  • How he recovers after a race weekend & what a weekend is like for the announcers
  • Costumes
  • Working with Carissa
  • Some of the most fun they have on race weekend—it’s something a lot of people don’t really know
  • How they deal with race start delays

Episode 111 – Traci Hines (Singer, Hipster Mermaid), Part 1

Traci Hines (Canva)

First of a 2-part interview with the Hipster Mermaid herself, Traci Hines. Traci is enormously talented, incredibly hard working, and has a deep love for Disney and it was great fun to get to talk to her. I had the pleasure of doing this one in person outside the Grand Californian Hotel at the Disneyland Resort. The sounds you hear in the background are people at the pool. There was a bit more wind than I realized, too, so sorry about that.

After this part of the interview, I’ll play one of Traci’s songs that she was kind enough to share before wrapping up. And no, I won’t be playing that song—not this time, anyway.

Traci talks about…

  • How she got started in performing
  • When her Disney focus started
  • A unique gift she had as a child
  • The Disney movie that was the big eye opener for her
  • Some of her main inspirations
  • How the cosplay part of what she does began
  • Her introduction to anime and anime conventions
  • The Disney character she was compared to growing up—and the first character costume she made for herself
  • What she collects
  • What it was like growing up a bit different from her friends
  • Voice acting
  • A bit of behind the scenes about a recent Hipster Mermaid video
  • Her part in the Hipster Mermaid phenomenon and how it became part of her brand
  • Whether she intentionally sculpted a brand or not and how it developed
  • Some of the contacts she’s had with Disney animators, The Little Mermaid directors, & more
  • How she got connected with Maker Studios and what that means for her
  • Other ways she’s worked for Disney
  • Whether she’s an introvert or an extrovert, how that plays out in her life, and when she realized it
  • How she learned to cherish the times she gets to do the things she loves to do

Episode 110 – Amanda Henderson (Disneyland Cast Member)

Amanda HendersonToday we get to return to Disneyland for a Cast Member story! Amanda Henderson was an Entertainment Host and she still has an incredible love for Disney in general, Disneyland in particular, and for the characters that is infectious and an absolute joy to listen to. Of course she’s got some great stories, too, and that’s one of the main reasons this podcast exists. Without it, so many people would have missed out on ever hearing these!

By the way, if you hear some extra laughing in the background, that’s our mutual friend Kathryn. She sat in on the interview to listen, and some of what Amanda shared just had to be laughed about!

Amanda talks about…

  • How she got started working at Disneyland and specifically as an Entertainment Host
  • Why the hiring process for an Entertainment Host is an audition rather than a traditional interview
  • Traditions Class—what it was like for her, getting her nametag, and what made her nametags unique
  • The best Cast Member “first day” story I’ve ever heard
  • What an Entertainment Host does
  • The awful way some people treat Entertainment Hosts
  • Her favorite moment of making magic for a guest
  • Something a guest did to make magic for her
  • Her favorite costume she got to wear
  • Her favorite character location and her favorite characters to host
  • How she felt when the voice actor for Robin Hood passed away
  • What she loved most about what she did
  • What guests can do to really make an Entertainment Host’s day
  • Her first time thinking, “I’m a part of this now!”
  • Why Disneyland is such a special place to her
  • If she could have any job working for the Walt Disney Company, what it would be and why
  • What inspires her—including, in her words, the “best story ever.”
