Episode 059 – Rolly Crump, Part 2

Rolly Crump
Stories of the Magic, Episode 59

Interview Guest: Rolly Crump

Today, we finish up my interview with Disney Legend, Imagineer, and more, Rolly Crump. As before, I got to ask a number of questions I’ve never been able to ask, this time more about the people he worked for and with.

Now, as I mentioned last time, in case you have sensitive ears, there is a little bit of PG-level language in this interview. You’d hear worse in almost any primetime TV show nowadays, but since the interviews are usually 100% G-rated, I thought you should know.

In this episode Rolly talks about:

  • Bringing it’s a small world to Walt Disney World, including the changes he made (some because he wanted to, some because he had to);
  • Yale Gracey;
  • Mary Blair;
  • Eric Larson;
  • Bob Gurr;
  • John Hench, Rolly’s mentor;
  • Walt Disney;
  • What it was like for him when Walt passed away;
  • Playing gags on each other at the Disney studio and in Imagineering—I almost left one of these stories out, but it was just to “Rolly” to cut;
  • “Another great story about vodka”—now there’s a phrase I never thought I’d hear in this podcast, but it really is a pretty funny story;
  • Whether he ever thought he was doing something special while he was working for Disney;
  • What it’s like to get all the attention he’s getting now;
  • What he loved most about what he did—one of them is something you can still see today if you visit Disneyland;
  • If there’s anything he’s never been asked that he’d like to be asked;
  • A thanks to Jeff Heimbuch for his work with Rolly on It’s Kind of a Cute Story, and why it was so different from other authors who’d wanted to work with him;
  • What inspires him;
  • His advice to you for following your dreams;
  • Shameless Plug Time.

Episode 058 – Rolly Crump, Part 1

Rolly Crump
Stories of the Magic, Episode 58

Interview Guest: Rolly Crump

We’re in a series of firsts here on the show, because here we have another one! Today, we have part one of my interview with Disney Legend, Imagineer, and more, Rolly Crump. If you’re a fan of it’s a small world, the Tiki Room pre-show area, and even the night lighting at Disneyland, then you’re a fan of Rolly’s work. I am so honored I get to have had this wonderful conversation.

I got to ask a number of questions I’ve never been able to ask before, and for the first time hear stories about Walt Disney from someone who worked with him personally. Now, in case you have sensitive ears, there is a little bit of PG-level language in this interview. You’d hear worse in almost any primetime TV show nowadays, but since the interviews are usually 100% G-rated, I thought you should know.

Rolly talks about:

  • How he got started working for Disney;
  • Why starting at the company was a shock to him, and why he loved it;
  • His first assignment as an artist;
  • Being an inbetweener;
  • Animating the spots on the Dalmatians in the 101 Dalmatians animated feature;
  • Whether he wanted to be an animator or not;
  • His first assignment with WED—now Walt Disney Imagineering;
  • How he designed the Enchanted Tiki Room pre-show area;
  • Whether he enjoyed being thrown into things he’d never done before, and why;
  • His philosophy;
  • Walt’s philosophy of what made a good work environment;
  • Working on concepts for the Haunted Mansion with Imagineer Yale Gracey, and the Museum of the Weird;
  • His roles in “it’s a small world,” and something very interesting about how the teams designed and built it;
  • Some of the things still in the attraction that he did;
  • How the clock in front of “it’s a small world” got there, and Walt’s hand in it;
  • Installing the attraction at the New York World’s Fair, watching guests experience it, and then moving it to Disneyland;
  • Experiencing the World’s Fair, and what Walt expected his people to do while they were there—and everywhere else;
  • Two instances where Dick Irvine didn’t think Rolly would get a project done—but he did it anyway—including the Adventureland Bazaar;
  • Something he learned from Walt;
  • Becoming Supervising Art Director of Disneyland—not exactly a promotion.

Episode 057 – Jennifer McGill

Jennifer McGill EP
Stories of the Magic, Episode 57

Interview Guest: Jennifer McGill

We have a first this time. Back in episodes 23, 24, and 25, I had Jennifer McGill, former Mouseketeer from the New Mickey Mouse Club. At the time, she talked about work she was doing on an album, an EP as it turns out, and I told her I’d have her back on the show when it was out. Well it is, so she is.

We don’t just talk about her album though, Jennifer has lots of great MMC stories to share with you. When we do get to the album—and even before—she has some very encouraging things to say, so if you’re in need of a bit of encouragement today, do yourself a favor and listen to this show. I know it’s another long one, but it was right on the cusp where one show was a bit long, but two would have been too short, so we’re going with a long one.

Jennifer talks about:

  • Lindsey Alley, one of the first of the New Mickey Mouse Club Mouseketeers;
  • The hosts of the MMC—Mowava Pryor, Fred Newman, and Terri Misner;
  • “Wild Thing Weekend”;
  • What it was like backstage, especially with the hair and makeup people, and why it was so amazing for her;
  • Chase Hampton, another of the first members of the MMC;
  • What it was like to watch some of the other Mouseketeers go on to such prominent fame;
  • What Britney Spears was like on set of the New Mickey Mouse Club;
  • Joking with Joey Fatone, and some more memories of him;
  • Struggling with the “fame issue” and how she’s overcome it;
  • Her self-titled EP;
  • One of the tracks—What I Know—and why it’s so important to her;
  • What is most meaningful to her to hear from fans;
  • Shameless Plug Time.

Episode 056 – Jim Korkis, Part 3

Jim Korkis

 Interview Guest: Jim Korkis

Today’s podcast is brought to you by audible.com – get a FREE audiobook download and 30 day free trial at StoriesoftheMagic.com/audible. There’s over 150,000 titles to choose from for your iPhone, Android, Kindle or mp3 player—including my book, Faith and the Magic Kingdom.

In this episode, we conclude my 3-part interview with author and Disney Historian, Jim Korkis. In our previous 2 sections we talked about how he first got interested in, and then interested in working for, the Walt Disney Company, how he got started working for Disney, including why he had to move to Orlando, what he loved most about what he did, why he wouldn’t want to work at the Disney Archives, how he came up with the idea of starting to write his first book, what each of his books is about (including a little tease about a couple more books he has coming soon, whether Walt Disney was anti-Semitic or anti-Catholic, and how we know, Walt’s early experience with church and religion, and more.

We pick right up where we left off. Now, a lot of this episode we’ll be talking about Walt Disney, his faith, and how it was expressed in his animation and in Disneyland. This is a subject that doesn’t get covered much, but I think it’s both interesting and important—whether you agree with Walt or not. As we discuss this subject, we’re not trying to convert anyone or anything like that. We’re just sharing the information. You can do with it as you choose.

In this episode, Jim (with some tangents) talks about…

  • Walt Disney’s contributions to charities, including a couple of great specific stories—one about a boy with terminal cancer and one about kids from a Catholic orphanage visiting Disneyland;
  • His philosophy that good will always overcome evil, including one of my favorite quotes from Alice Davis I’ve ever heard;
  • Walt’s view of prayer;
  • Why we assume it was the behavior of their father that turned them off of going to church;
  • Roy O. Disney’s (Walt’s brother) response to the question, “Is there a God?”;
  • Who Walt Disney was named after;
  • A terrible biography of Walt Disney that you should not have on your bookshelf, including a couple of ridiculous claims from it;
  • A couple other Walt myths debunked;
  • Whether the Walt Disney Studios was built to be a hospital;
  • The message of hope, light, and goodness in Fantasia, specifically the last two segments, and how they reflect Walt’s faith;
  • Why Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride at Disneyland ends with the riders going to Hell—it’s not in the film!;
  • The black & white animated short Hell’s Bells;
  • Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and why Walt made a couple of the choices he did when adapting the story;
  • Walt’s original plan to have a church on Main Street, where it was going to go, what it was going to be like, and why it’s not there;
  • Where you can find a representation of Judaism on Disneyland’s Main Street U.S.A., and where it likely came from;
  • What day it’s supposed to be on Walt Disney World’s Main Street U.S.A., and whether that’s also true at Disneyland;
  • What he never gets asked that he wishes people would ask him;
  • What inspires him;
  • His advice to you for following your dreams, and some extra advice if it happens to involve Disney history;
  • Shameless Plug Time.

In this episode, we continue my 3-part interview with author and Disney Historian, Jim Korkis. In part 1 we talked about how he first got interested in, and then interested in working for, the Walt Disney Company, his very first interview of someone from Disney, when he was 12 years old, how he got started working for Disney, including why he had to move to Orlando, teaching as part of Disney University, then tours with Disney Adult Discoveries, a couple of ways Walt Disney was always keeping the guests in mind and planning ahead, what he loved most about what he did, and more.

Before we get into part 2, this is the last week to get that special gift for you as a listener to Stories of the Magic. In case you haven’t heard me talk about it before, in preparation for the release of the book, I created a 1-hour audio walking tour of Disneyland. Originally this was available only to people who bought the book during the Launch, but now I’m making it available to you as a free download for the month of April, so as of the release of this episode you have a little less than a week still to get it. No strings. Nothing to fill out or sign up for. Just go to storiesofthemagic.com/faithaudiotour. That’s a direct link to the file to download it. And thank you to the dozens of you who have already done so!

In this episode, Jim talks about…

  • The job he’d love to have working for Disney—which doesn’t currently exist;
  • Why he wouldn’t want to work at the Disney Archives;
  • Why Disney historians are so needed right now especially;
  • What (or who) you may find just looking around your neighborhood;
  • The Walt’s People series of books by Didier Getz, and something he just discovered in the last couple of years that people had falsely believed about Walt since 1935;
  • Werner Weiss and his Yesterland.com site;
  • Something special that most people never knew about a light bulb in the Car Barn at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom—something the public doesn’t get to see now;
  • Jim’s Disney bookshelves—they’re impressive;
  • Why he wanted a print edition of his books, not just a Kindle edition;
  • How he came up with the idea of starting to write his first book;
  • How long he plans to continue writing;
  • What The Vault of Walt is about;
  • His second book, Who’s Afraid of Song of the South;
  • His most recent book, The Book of Mouse – If you’re interested in Mickey Mouse, you need this book!;
  • A little tease about a couple more books he has coming soon;
  • The Disney book he would like to see written and why he loves reading so much;
  • A question we have for you;
  • One of Jim’s favorite Disney books, and one of mine;
  • Was Walt Disney anti-Semitic, or anti-Catholic, and how do we know;
  • Walt’s early experience with church and religion, and how that affected him later on, including why he didn’t go to church after he grew up and his belief about how you should show your belief in God.
