Randy CrenshawStories of the Magic, Episode 29

Interview Guest: Randy Crenshaw

Sponsored by Leaving Conformity Coaching.

In this episode, we pick up where we left off with Randy Crenshaw for part 2 of his interview. If you missed the first part, in the previous episode, I encourage you to go back and listen to it. It’s a lot of fun, and highly entertaining!

In this episode, Randy talks about:

  • Some of the singing he did in Phineas & Ferb…including a brief demonstration;
  • His work on Animaniacs, Pinky & the Brain, and some other Warner Bros. animation projects;
  • How Animaniacs and Pinky & the Brain might be considered a precursor to Phineas & Ferb;
  • The work he did for TV shows like John Doe and Walker: Texas Ranger–it may not be what you’ve ever expected;
  • Changes in the way sound-alikes are used in TV, movies, and even albums—and why it is the way it is now. I had no idea!;
  • Albums he sang on (and in some places played instruments on) like Mickey Unrapped (and how that was so different than the stuff that comes out today), and with singers like Rosemary Clooney (who personally asked him to be on her White Christmas album), Vince Gill, Amy Grant, and Mary Rice Hopkins;
  • Working as a vocal contractor for the Academy of Country Music awards—and how that’s changed over the years;
  • Why it’s challenging to be a children’s recording artist for many years;
  • What he started out doing in music when he came to California—it wasn’t singing;
  • Matching what you have a passion for with what you’re skilled at doing—and why that’s so important, even though people will try to talk you out of it;
  • Singing on the soundtracks for A Goofy Movie (moving on from pigs to opossums for this one!) and Newsies;
  • Stunt singing—and the special kind of person it takes to do that;
  • The reality of his life as a freelancer—and what you can learn from it, even though you may have a so-called “secure” job;
  • And what got him interested in working for Disney—yes, we finally make it back to Disney!
