Episode 074 – Joe Cosgrove, Part 1

Joe CosgroveIn this episode we begin a new 3-part interview with the author of Walt Dreamers Me, Joe Cosgrove. Joe has a long and interesting history, including connections with Disney, the Disney Studios, and many other well-known people (a couple of whom I completely butchered the pronunciation of their names). Something else that made this interview extra-fun for me was getting to conduct it in person in the Club 1901 Lounge, Disney California Adventure’s private lounge for Club 33 members and their guests. As I mentioned at the end of the last interview, this one is a bit different than what you’re used to hearing on the show, but I think you’ll find it quite interesting.

As a reminder, I’m bringing back the Disneyana Show offer I made back in July. For a limited time, you can get an autographed copy of Faith and the Magic Kingdom for $17, of Once Upon YOUR Time, my first book, for $6, or of both for $20! For more details or to order, go to storiesofthemagic.com/christmas14. If you want either or both of these to give as Christmas gifts, be sure to buy them on or before December 20 so I can get them to you in time!

In this episode Joe talks about:

  • The significance of the movies Snow White, Fantasia, Pinocchio, and Cinderella in his early life;
  • A positive addiction he developed when he was a kid that still continues today;
  • How he got started in radio;
  • Harold Okenga and Park Street Church;
  • Charles Fuller, Walt Disney, and their similarities;
  • What brings people happiness;
  • More about Charles Fuller;
  • Some lessons Fuller taught, and why they’re so important.

Episode 073 – Holly Bartel, Part 3

Holly Bartel

In this episode we conclude our 3-part interview with former Disneyland Cast Member Holly Bartel. Last time we talked a lot about her work as a Disneyland Tour Guide, with holiday tours and VIP groups especially.  This time, we wrap up with some great inspiration, encouragement, and of course, more fun stories!

Again, Skype acted up on us, so there are some glitches in the audio. I fixed what I could, and they don’t affect most of the interview, so I don’t think they’ll bother you too much. And if anyone has any suggestions on how to remedy this problem, I’d love to hear them!

In this episode Holly talks about:

  • Some nice things we as Guests can do for Cast Members, and the highest compliment we can give;
  • Good advice for leaving compliments at Guest Relations;
  • Piloting a new Guest Relations position;
  • Why she chose to leave working at Disneyland;
  • Realizing she was doing something really special;
  • What she loved most about what she did;
  • What a Guest usually really means when they ask, “What time is the 3 o’clock parade?”;
  • What she would want to do if she could have any job working for Disney and why;
  • Some valuable tips for planning your visit to Disneyland;
  • What she never (or rarely) gets asked;
  • What inspires her;
  • Her advice to you for following your dreams;
  • The “Yes Program”;
  • Shameless Plug Time.

Episode 072 – Holly Bartel, Part 2

Want to know what it’s like to be a Disneyland Tour Guide or Guest Relations Cast member? Find out here!

Holly BartelIn this episode we continue our 3-part interview with former Disneyland Cast Member Holly Bartel. Last time we talked about how she got started at Disneyland, and about her time in Fantasyland attractions. We’d just started to get into her time in Guest Relations when we had to wrap up part 1, so that’s where we pick up this time. I had so much fun editing this one, and I’m sure you’ll have fun listening!
Skype acted up on us, so there are some glitches in the audio. I fixed what I could, and they don’t affect most of the interview, so I don’t think they’ll bother you too much.

I’ve got something very special to tell you about before we go back to the interview. My birthday was Wednesday, November 26. Today also kicks off the Christmas season in earnest. And this month marks the 1-year anniversary of the release of my book, Faith and the Magic Kingdom. So, as my gift to you, I’m bringing back the Disneyana Show offer I made back in July. For a limited time, you can get an autographed copy of that book for $17, of Once Upon YOUR Time, my first book, for $6, or of both for $20! For more details or to order, go to storiesofthemagic.com/christmas14.

In this episode Holly talks about:

  • Her favorite area of Disney California Adventure, and whether she misses anything from the “old” DCA;
  • Lost and Found and the Guest Relations front desk;
  • The Holiday Time at Disneyland Park Tour and what made it fun, but difficult to learn;
  • The Halloween Tour, and what’s unique about doing that one
  • VIP tours;
  • The most stressful part of being a Tour Guide, and what was fun about hosting famous people
  • Some of her favorite VIP groups;
  • Hosting Stana Katic and some of the crew from Castle;
  • One of the nicest well-known people she remembers hosting: Lacey Chabert—this was a sweet story;
  • Sharing with guests favorite hidden details;
  • Becoming a Guest Relations Lead, one of the most stretching experiences of her life;
  • A funny story about dealing with an irate Guest—I laughed out loud again while editing;
  • A couple of examples of really special moments of extra magic—some she was involved with, some not.

Episode 071 – Holly Bartel, Part 1

Holly BartelIn this episode we begin a 3-part interview with former Disneyland Cast Member Holly Bartel. It’s been a while since I talked to someone who was strictly a Cast Member, so this was a nice change of pace, and she had some very interesting things to share and some great stories.

Skype acted up on us, so there are some glitches in the audio. I fixed what I could, and they don’t affect most of the interview, so I don’t think they’ll bother you too much.

In this episode Holly talks about:

  • How she got started working at Disneyland;
  • What the Disneyland College Program is;
  • Learning and working Storybook Land Canal Boats;
  • Cross-training to the Fantasyland Classics attractions;
  • What got in her head the most working the dark rides—it’s probably not what you think;
  • Her favorite attractions to work and why;
  • Some interesting guest interactions she had;
  • Participating in proposals on Storybook Land;
  • A very special story I shared with Holly;
  • Transferring to Guest Relations and why she wanted to;
  • Working the Guest Relations phones, then the information boards;
  • A couple of the comments she heard working the Disney California Adventure info board during the DCA reimagining;
  • Guest Relations rotations;
  • Special training that was introduced with the “new” DCA.

Episode 070 – Jeff Heimbuch, Part 2

Jeff HeimbuchIn this episode we conclude my interview with Jeff Heimbuch at Disneyland. In part 1, we talked about Jeff working with Rolly Crump on his autobiography and getting to know him, the companion CDs, and writing his own book. This time we’ll talk more about his book, his podcast, Communicore Weekly, and more!

As before, we did have to stop recording a couple of times as fans of Jeff saw us and came over to say hello and take a picture, which was cool. Other than those pauses, though, what you’ll hear is the real-time sounds of the park and the interview—still with some unexpected clicks that came from somewhere I can’t identify, but hopefully they’re not too distracting. Enjoy!

In this episode Jeff talks about:

  • What two of the most fascinating windows are that he discovered while researching the book, including one pretty hilarious story;
  • How the Communicore Weekly podcast got started;
  • Behind the scenes with the podcast;
  • Is Disney hitting us over the head with Frozen or is it guest demand?;
  • More detours about Disney attractions present and future;
  • Back to Communicore Weekly—what’s in it and what makes it different;
  • Going more in depth on George’s Book of the Week segment;
  • Visiting Flushing Meadows, the site of the 1964-65 World’s Fair;
  • Whether show segments ever go off-topic;
  • If he could work for the Walt Disney Company what he would do and why;
  • Whether there’s something he never gets asked but wishes he would—and then we talk about it;
  • What inspires him;
  • His advice to you for following your dreams;
  • Shameless Plug Time.
