Episode 029 – Randy Crenshaw, Part 2

Randy CrenshawStories of the Magic, Episode 29

Interview Guest: Randy Crenshaw

Sponsored by Leaving Conformity Coaching.

In this episode, we pick up where we left off with Randy Crenshaw for part 2 of his interview. If you missed the first part, in the previous episode, I encourage you to go back and listen to it. It’s a lot of fun, and highly entertaining!

In this episode, Randy talks about:

  • Some of the singing he did in Phineas & Ferb…including a brief demonstration;
  • His work on Animaniacs, Pinky & the Brain, and some other Warner Bros. animation projects;
  • How Animaniacs and Pinky & the Brain might be considered a precursor to Phineas & Ferb;
  • The work he did for TV shows like John Doe and Walker: Texas Ranger–it may not be what you’ve ever expected;
  • Changes in the way sound-alikes are used in TV, movies, and even albums—and why it is the way it is now. I had no idea!;
  • Albums he sang on (and in some places played instruments on) like Mickey Unrapped (and how that was so different than the stuff that comes out today), and with singers like Rosemary Clooney (who personally asked him to be on her White Christmas album), Vince Gill, Amy Grant, and Mary Rice Hopkins;
  • Working as a vocal contractor for the Academy of Country Music awards—and how that’s changed over the years;
  • Why it’s challenging to be a children’s recording artist for many years;
  • What he started out doing in music when he came to California—it wasn’t singing;
  • Matching what you have a passion for with what you’re skilled at doing—and why that’s so important, even though people will try to talk you out of it;
  • Singing on the soundtracks for A Goofy Movie (moving on from pigs to opossums for this one!) and Newsies;
  • Stunt singing—and the special kind of person it takes to do that;
  • The reality of his life as a freelancer—and what you can learn from it, even though you may have a so-called “secure” job;
  • And what got him interested in working for Disney—yes, we finally make it back to Disney!

Episode 028 – Randy Crenshaw, Part 1

Randy CrenshawStories of the Magic, Episode 28

Interview Guest: Randy Crenshaw

Sponsored by Leaving Conformity Coaching.

In this episode, we get to hear from Randy Crenshaw, a talented and prolific singer, voice artist, and musician. If you’ve been to a Disney park, watched Sofia the First or Phineas & Ferb, are a fan of the Animaniacs and Pinky & the Brain (yes, I know they’re not Disney, just go with it), or any of well over a hundred other projects like these and others, including many albums, you’ve heard Randy. His career is extensive, varied, and almost entirely off-stage, so he just may be one of the most famous people you’ve never heard of—and I say that with all due respect.

Fortunately for us, a lot of his work has been for and with Disney, so in this episode, part 1 of a 3 part interview, we get to hear…

Randy talks about:

  • How he got started working for Disney, singing on pre-recorded in-park shows and later some various character voice acting;
  • The very first thing he did;
  • The complexity of oinking—you’d be surprised;
  • Details on several of the projects he did for the Disney parks (stateside and around the world), including;
    • Haunted Mansion Holiday;
    • Light Magic;
    • Disneyland’s Mary Poppins show in honor of the movie’s 40th anniversary;
    • A pirate show at Walt Disney World;
    • Some interesting behind-the-scenes about singing on projects in Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris—in the various native languages;
  • Fascinating projects outside the parks, including for Disney on Ice, movies like Hook, Enchanted, and Muppet Christmas Carol; CD’s like Muppet Beach Party; and TV projects like Sofia the First…and a hint of Phineas and Ferb;
  • The difference between trolls and pirates—really;
  • And showing some love to Laura Dickinson!

This episode is going to be a little different, because I also have some audio to share with you from a couple of new friends of mine. Aaron and Jason, from the Dole Whips and Dark Rides podcast, are working on a project that is incredibly important (called Ears for Isaac), and I wanted them to tell you about it in their own words.

So, after the interview, you’ll get to hear a fun song Randy Crenshaw sang, and then we’ll move straight into what Aaron and Jason have to share. Finally, I’ll come back to wrap up this week.

DbM339_closeup8-88aStories of the Magic, Episode 26

Interview Guest: Mark Hickson

Sponsored by Leaving Conformity Coaching.

I am very excited today to welcome my very first Imagineer to Stories of the Magic! Mark Hickson started on the Splash Mountain/Critter Country project at Disneyland, then was chosen to become part of the Tokyo Disneyland Project Office, where he was involved in Tokyo DisneySea & Disney’s Hollywood Studios, as well as a dozen or so specific projects.

He also worked on Spaceship Earth Main Show change-out and AT&T post show, “Honey, I Shrunk the Audience”, the EPCOT Interactive Fountain and Communicore Fountain, and Special Projects such as the Broadway Production of Beauty and the Beast, Disneyland’s 35th Birthday, Producer/Director on multiple video projects, most related to Tokyo Disneyland, and the development of Tokyo Disneyland’s 5, 10 & 20 year Master Plan.

Since working for Disney, Mark has created the Disney by Mark website, offering a unique look at Disney that only a former Imagineer can share. The website features news, stories, and editorials about the Walt Disney Company and its subsidiaries, as well as consumer product, film, television, theme park, resort, and dining reviews.

Mark talks about:

  • How he got hired by Walt Disney Imagineering;
  • What it was like coming in mid-project on Splash Mountain and some of the unique challenges they encountered;
  • Working on multiple projects for Tokyo;
  • Moving on to Epcot;
  • What it was like to be involved in the creation of Honey I Shrunk the Audience;
  • WDI being approached with special projects;
  • And a hint of the ideas they came up with for Disneyland’s 35th birthday (hear the rest of that story in Part 2!).

Episode 025 – Jennifer McGill, Part 3

 Jennifer McGill

Stories of the Magic, Episode 25

Interview Guest: Jennifer McGill

Sponsored by Leaving Conformity Coaching.

In this episode, we finish my interview with Jennifer McGill. Last time, we talked about how she keeps a balance between work and play on her jobs, how she got connected with several of the jobs she’s had over the years, what she loved most about what she did, her “residual pixie dust” from being on the Mickey Mouse Club, her performing career after Disney, the new album she’s working on, the Disney job she would most love to have, and much more!

After this part of the interview, I’ll play the final clip from This Little Light, performed by Jennifer (and featuring the Mwangaza Children’s Choir), as I did last week.

Jennifer talks about:

  • What she never gets asked that she wishes people would ask her;
  • Her favorite “Theme Day” from the New Mickey Mouse Club (here’s a hint: lots of guest artists like TLC, New Kids on the Block, Brian McKnight, and Tiffany were involved)…and some great stories about her time on the show and fellow Mouseketeers;
  • Meeting Michael Jackson;
  • How being on the Mickey Mouse Club taught her to be humble and know her own value without comparing herself to others;
  • What inspires her—personally and in the arts;
  • Her advice to you for following your dreams;
  • And so much more. I can’t even summarize this one—just listen and enjoy.
