Episode 039 – Jonathan Chang, Part 1

Jonathan ChangStories of the Magic, Episode 39

Interview Guest: Jonathan Chang

In this episode, we’re back to our regular format for part 1 of my interview with Jonathan Chang, a former member of the Magic Kingdom Korps. If you weren’t around Disneyland in the 1990s you may have never heard of this group (though if you’re familiar with FutureCorps at Epcot, you know the concept). I don’t hear this group talked about much, so I’m excited to get to share about them with you!

For some reason, there were some issues with the audio levels in this episode, so the volume is a bit irregular at times. I cleaned it up as much as I could, but it’s still not where I’d like it to be. Sorry about that!

In this episode Jonathan talks about…

  • What he did at Disneyland;
  • How he found out about the Magic Kingdom Korps and the auditions for it;
  • The instrument that made the Korps unique;
  • What a typical performance day was like;
  • Whether he had any favorite songs they performed;
  • How they managed rehearsal times;
  • Exposing new audiences to drum & bugle corps music;
  • How changes happening in the park affected the group;
  • The one song they tried and immediately pulled;
  • How the end of the Magic Kingdom Korps’ run came about;
  • The relationship between the Magic Kingdom Korps and the Trash Can Trio;
  • And if he’d given any thought to working at Disneyland before the opportunity to perform with the Korps arose.

By the way, I played Dean Gaschler’s intro at the beginning because he has a new book out! The book he mentioned when he was on the show, I Led the Parade: Main Street Memories is now available! You can get it on his website, DeanGaschler.com.

Episode 038 – D23 Expo 2013, Part 2

D23 Expo 2013Stories of the Magic, Episode 38

Interview Guest: D23 Expo 2013 Special

This week we return to the 2013 D23 Expo for more audio clips and interviews! If you want to hear more about the Expo itself, my wife Faye and I were interviewed on the Tales from the Mouse House Disneyland podcast (Faye was covering it for them). Just the 30,000-foot overview was long–we talked for 2-1/2 hours! It was a lot of fun, though, so if you missed the Expo or you were there but want to hear about some of what you may have missed (there was no way to see and do it all!), check out episode 76 and episode 77 of that podcast.

There are no podcast promos, sponsorship messages, or anything else like that in this episode (with one notable exception) to try to keep it to a manageable length.

In this episode you’ll hear…

  • Clips from the “Craft of Creativity” panel.
  • Brief interviews with 3 Imagineers.
  • Clips from the “Working with Walt” panel.

Before each of these I inserted brief explanations so you know what’s coming next. I also have a question I need your input on!

Listen to me on PassporterOn September 4, 2013 I was honored to be the guest on the PassPorter Moms Podcast. Check out Episode 190 to hear me talk about my book Once Upon YOUR Time and to give some touring tips & advice! If you want to hear more of me on that show, call or email them and let them know!

Episode 037 – D23 Expo 2013, Part 1

D23 Expo 2013Stories of the Magic, Episode 37

Interview Guest: D23 Expo 2013 Special

This episode is a bit of departure from the norm. I attended the 2013 D23 Expo August 9-11 at the Anaheim Convention Center, and while I was there I captured a ton of audio for this podcast. I recorded several panels & presentations and interviewed 6 Imagineers in the “Journey into Imagineering” pavilion. I ended up getting so much great audio that it’s going to take two episodes just to share the highlights with you!

If you want to hear more about the Expo itself, my wife Faye and I were interviewed on the Tales from the Mouse House Disneyland podcast (Faye was covering it for them). Again, just the 30,000-foot overview was long–we talked for 2-1/2 hours! It was a lot of fun, though, so if you missed the Expo or you were there but want to hear about some of what you may have missed (there was no way to see and do it all!), check out episode 76 and episode 77 of that podcast.

There are no podcast promos, sponsorship messages, or anything else like that in this episode to try to keep it to a manageable length.

In this episode you’ll hear…

  • Clips from the “Women of Pixar” presentation.
  • A couple of excerpts from a media call with Alan Menkhen and Richard Sherman.
  • 2 clips from the “Disney Songbook” concert, both from Richard Sherman
  • Brief interviews with 3 Imagineers.
  • Clips from the “Leave ‘Em Laughing” Imagineering panel.
  • Clips from the Disney Legends Ceremony.

Before each of these I inserted brief explanations so you know what’s coming next. I also have a question I need your input on!

Welcome to Episode 35 of Stories of the Magic! I’m Randy, your host. Thank you for joining me! And thank you for 1 year of Stories of the Magic!

OK, apparently I need to stop promising when I’ll get the next show out. Every time I do, something interferes. So instead, I’ll just say that new episodes will come out as often and as regularly as I can get them out. I value every single one of you who listens to Stories of the Magic, and I want to provide a quality product to you, and I’m doing my very best to do exactly that.

In this episode, we head back to the wilds of Adventureland for a fun conversation with Kyle Crocker, a former skipper on the World Famous Jungle Cruise at Disneyland, and current host of the Tales from the Jungle Crews podcast.

In this episode, Kyle talks about:
  • How he got started working for Disneyland and what he did there;
  • The special memory he has of the Jungle Cruise as a little kid;
  • Being a Disney California Adventure CM first—at the Maliboomer and the Orange Stinger;
  • Telling Shaq that he couldn’t ride the Maliboomer;
  • The difference between a “ride” and an “attraction”…sort of;
  • Starting on Jungle Cruise, including some of what training was like;
  • The most fulfilling thing he did while working at the Disneyland Resort—and what made it so;
  • What makes a good Jungle Cruise skipper;
  • How he kept the attraction fresh and interesting for himself and his guests;
  • Dealing with “off” days, both personally and from environmental challenges;
  • A funny story about doing “tours” with hearing impaired guests and their interpreters;
  • The Tales from the Jungle Crews podcast that he hosts;
  • And moving from Jungle Cruise to several other attractions.
